PUMA was founded in 1948, born as an amazing product of sibling rivalry which then has established itself as the world's third-largest sportswear brand. Founded by Rudolf Dassler, Dassler first gained notoriety in the sportswear realm when he and his brother Adolf Dassler together formed the company, Gebdrûder Dassler Schuhfabrik (Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory). Many German athletes sported the Dassler spikes in the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics as well Jesse Owens who won four gold medals in the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, also sporting the Dassler spikes. The already strained relationship between the two brothers gradually worsened despite their success and the two came to an agreement to professionally split in 1948. They each went their separate ways, with Adolf founded adidas and Rudolf with PUMA. PUMA soon cemented its reputation as one of the biggest figures in sneaker culture thanks to the help of a revolutionary release of the football boots, a marketing stunt featuring Pele for the World Cup and a close-knit relationship with athletes and sports.
The SUEDE line's story has a lot of tumultuous events. With over 50 years of life in a shoe, the SUEDE became a cult classic while going over and through several rebrandings. With humble beginnings as the PUMA CRACK, the shoe then evolved into the CLYDE, followed by PUMA STATES and finally globally adopted the name PUMA SUEDE.
By the late '80s, another widely celebrated subculture was enjoying a historic blooming stage of its own, the rebirth of skateboarding. Looking to separate itself from the clunky pads and sweaty helmets, skateboarding soon took to the streets. With the changing winds came the demand for durable, versatile, and comfortable skate shoes and of course, waiting at the other end of skateboarding's identity splice was the PUMA SUEDE's compliant upper, sturdy midsole, and unrestricted colour palette. Once again PUMA's soothsayer silhouette casually rode into an integral era and the SUEDE found its rightful place on the feet of skateboarders across the globe.
